Health Behaviour Change (HBC)
This framework is useful at illustrating the process of HBC. This may be useful to those of you unfamiliar to HBC models to consider in terms of developing your practice within consultations and patient interactions. These models can look different but contain similar components.
Another model which enhances cardiovascular care in practice and is illustrated within the case scenarios and in the videos is Health Behaviour Change (HBC).
Aware of the problem and of the desired behaviour change
Precontemplation
Unaware of the problem
Additional Information
Framework for understanding the process of HBC suggests series of stages through which people pass as they change a behaviour.
Change is viewed as a progression from;
Initial precontemplation stage where the person is not currently considering change
Contemplation where the person undertakes serious evaluation of considerations for or against change
Successful progression through previous states then leads to the planning of change and taking action. If sucessful, the fifth and final stage is maintenance, which can lead to long term, successful lifestyle change.
Also described is the process of relapse but this can be seen as a normal part of the cycle, which people can move on from and start the process again.
Motivation is present in differing degrees throughout, it is not a case of being present or not present.
HBC in action can be seen across this resource both in illustrative and video format.
