Reflecting on the consultation skills used by Nurse Heather in the audio, think about Anne’s stage of health behaviour change in order to answer the following question.
Diet: Stage 1 Pre-contemplation
- I just don’t have the time to cook; it’s easier to use ready meals
- Most of my friends are like me and don’t have time to cook, they all seem pretty healthy.
- Text could stay the same
Physical Activity: Stage 1 Pre-contemplation
- I used to go to the gym but I can’t seem to find the time these days
- It’s too expensive to exercise and you need to have the right gear
- Text could stay the same
Smoking: Stage 2 Contemplation/Thinking
- Text could stay the same
- Smoking really relaxes me but I wouldn’t like to make my son’s asthma worse through smoking in front of him.
- Text could remain the same
Alcohol: Stage 2 Preparation/Planning
- After my next birthday I would like to cut down my drinking
- Some of my friends drink very heavily, when we go out I feel I have to drink with them, maybe I should suggest doing something other than the pub.
- I might try drinking a vodka instead of a large glass of white wine when I’m out instead
Depressed Mood: Stage 3 Preparation/Planning
- I would like my GP to refer me to counselling
- I’ve been depressed all my life, I don’t see how I can change now
- I suppose feeling low does affect what I do, like I tend to smoke more when I am feeling down
Anne is at the pre-contemplation stage for physical activity and diet, the contemplation stage for smoking and the preparation stage for alcohol and depression.
