Reflecting on Anne’s consultation

Reflecting on the consultation skills used by Nurse Heather in the audio, think about Anne’s stage of health behaviour change in order to answer the following question.

Diet: Stage 1 Pre-contemplation

  1. I just don’t have the time to cook; it’s easier to use ready meals
  2. Most of my friends are like me and don’t have time to cook, they all seem pretty healthy.
  3. Text could stay the same

Physical Activity: Stage 1 Pre-contemplation

  1. I used to go to the gym but I can’t seem to find the time these days
  2. It’s too expensive to exercise and you need to have the right gear
  3. Text could stay the same

Smoking: Stage 2 Contemplation/Thinking

  1. Text could stay the same
  2. Smoking really relaxes me but I wouldn’t like to make my son’s asthma worse through smoking in front of him.
  3. Text could remain the same

Alcohol: Stage 2 Preparation/Planning

  1. After my next birthday I would like to cut down my drinking
  2. Some of my friends drink very heavily, when we go out I feel I have to drink with them, maybe I should suggest doing something other than the pub.
  3. I might try drinking a vodka instead of a large glass of white wine when I’m out instead

Depressed Mood: Stage 3 Preparation/Planning

  1. I would like my GP to refer me to counselling
  2. I’ve been depressed all my life, I don’t see how I can change now
  3. I suppose feeling low does affect what I do, like I tend to smoke more when I am feeling down

Anne is at the pre-contemplation stage for physical activity and diet, the contemplation stage for smoking and the preparation stage for alcohol and depression.
