Patients need support with self management and need to consider there contribution to there health. When giving information, it is good practice to establish the person’s understanding first so that you can adapt and tailor the information you give them, and correct any misconceptions. ‘Elicit-provide-elicit’ is a helpful approach in giving information, which allows you to check out the person’s understanding as you go i.e. regularly stopping to get feedback and allow the person to ask any questions “what do you make of what I have told you so far?” – See Public Health Scotland Behaviour Change Course.
