First contact advice

On receipt of the referral a member of the CR team makes contact with Michał on the phone to assess his progress post-op. It is now 7 days since discharge.

The dialogue below illustrates how the OARS technique can be successful in a short conversation and will continue to be used in Michał’s case.

CR: Hello Mr Lubinzki, my name is Richard I work within Cardiac Rehabilitation. I am calling to see how you are doing since you got home from hospital after your operation.

Michał: I am still very sore, I find it hard to sleep.

Richard is using open questions to establish rapport

CR:Can you tell me how your wound has been following your surgery? How are you managing with your painkillers and antibiotics?

Michał: The nurses are happy with my wound, I have finished my antibiotics and I stopped taking my painkillers during the day.

CR: I suggest you continue with the painkillers as prescribed and that will help you with the pain and may help you sleep.

An important part of CR is medication education and adherence.

CR: Can you tell me how much walking you have done over the past few days?

Michał: I have not been out much just walking around the flat and I have been following the advice given to me when I left hospital.

CR: That’s great. Well done. We will discuss exercise further when you come in for your CR assessment.

Affrimations are statements that help build rapport and promote confidence and self esteem.

CR: Is there anything you would like to ask me before your CR appointment?

Michał: Not really, I can”t think of anything just now.

The CR discusses the appointment for his assessment.
