Raza’s results

Raza in waiting room

Raza has had his echocardiogram which demonstrated HF-REF. This is probably due to his hypertension but he may require further investigations to confirm aetiology. Today he is in the practice to discuss his results.

Raza's results

Bloods

Urea 9.4 Creat 114 Sodium 136 Potassium 4.2 eGFR 60
Bili 9 ALP 87 ALT 77 albumin 45.
TSH 2.1 RBC 120 WCC 6.8 plate 288 glucose 5.6

ECG – sinus tachycardia – rate 104

CXR – enlarged heart – some signs of pulmonary oedema

echocardiogram – left ventricle is moderately dilated with slight mitral regurgitation present. Overall left ventricluar systolic dysfunction is moderately impaired.

The next steps are

  • Medication
  • Self management

Pulse point

“The degree of heart failure is often quantified by a percentage called ejection fraction.”

The heart does not eject all of the blood out of the ventricle. Only about two-thirds of the blood is normally pumped out with each beat, and that fraction is referred to as the ejection fraction. The ejection fraction is an indicator of the heart’s health. Sometimes this will be quantified on an echocardiogram report and with a diagnosis of heart failure it can be reduced. You will see this used again within medication initiation guidelines and may see it when you are reviewing patient’s medical reports.
