Stroke Training and Awareness Resources (STARs)

Informing patients and carers

Connie and her family need information presented several times. Information can be given in a variety of ways such as spoken, written and through demonstration. This can include the possible consequences of not carefully managing her swallowing problem and the rationale for the recommendations should be explained. Her family are more likely to support Connie if they are included and given practical advice on how to help. It is important to check that Connie is understanding and she may need frequent reminders. It is important that all staff are positive about the modified consistencies of food and drink presented to Connie and explain what the food is that is being served to her.
