Cause of bladder and bowel dysfunction Reason
Urinary tract infection Bacterial infections release toxins which irritate the bladder wall and result in frequency, urgency and urge urinary incontinence.
Pre-stroke conditions Diabetes is associated with polyuria and neuropathy which reduces sensation of bladder filling and need to void. Responsiveness of urethral sphincter and detrusor are reduced. Can cause retention, incomplete emptying and overflow urinary incontinence.
Constipation May obstruct bladder neck leading to an inability to relax fully and urinary retention, incomplete emptying and overflow urinary incontinence.
Inadequate fluid intake Concentrated urine will irritate the bladder which causes frequency, urgency and urge urinary incontinence.
Stress urinary incontinence May be previously present or result from stroke related weakness or paresis of pelvic floor muscles.
Mixed urinary incontinence Stroke induced urge may exacerbate previous stress urinary incontinence which causes a mixed urinary incontinence
