Cognitive status – Mild cognitive impairment and dysphasia post-stroke makes it difficult for John to express his need and to find the toilet unaided.

Right hemiplegia – John’s hand weakness means he does not have fine dexterity and cannot manage clothing such as trousers, shirts (buttons and zips) and shoes (laces, fastenings).

John’s balance is poor and he walks slowly, with the assistance of one person using a walking frame.

Proprioception – John’s impaired proprioception makes it difficult for him to manage a urinal especially in bed.
