Equipment that might help John to overcome these functional challenges

Q. Select Yes or No for each.

Q. What equipment might help John to overcome these functional challenges?

1. Superabsorbent gel (e.g. VernaGel™) or a non-spill adapter – Yes – this will stop spills from urinal in bed and elsewhere.

2. Bladder training – No – John has no urgency so bladder training would not help.

3. Adapted clothing – Yes – any clothing which uses Velcro™ fastening and elastic waisted/drawstring trousers avoid need for buttons and zips.

4. Pelvic floor muscle exercises – No – John does not have a weak pelvic floor. Exercises do no harm, but are unlikely to improve his situation.

5. Containment pads – Yes – to build John’s confidence as his walking improves and reduce his risk of falling when walking to the toilet. Only for short-term use during rehabilitation as pads do not promote recovery of bladder function but do maintain social continence and individual dignity.

6. Sheath catheter – No – these are for containment not rehabilitation. Would discourage John from using the toilet or urinal and prolong his recovery of continence.
