Isla has had her cardiovascular disease risk assessed. Her healthcare provider determines she has some risk factors for developing cardiovascular disease including family history, prediabetes, migraines with aura, overweight, unhealthy diet, ethnicity, and lack of physical activity. Based on her ASSIGN score that was measured, she is currently considered low risk for developing cardiovascular disease.
Her healthcare provider explains she should have her ASSIGN score measured again in 5 years, but in the meantime, there are things Isla can do to lower her risk even more. These include eating a healthy, balanced diet and increasing her exercise activity to help to manage her prediabetes and body mass index.
Please click through the cards below to learn more about how Isla and her healthcare provider created Isla’s treatment plan to manage her cardiovascular risk and contraception choice.
Diet
- They spend time discussing her diet and food choices. Her healthcare provider provides Isla with information and resources on the recommended guidelines for eating a healthy and balanced diet to take home. They also discussed the option of being referred to a Registered Dietician, but Isla states she would like to wait and see how she feels before deciding.
Exercise
- Next, Isla and her healthcare provider discuss her exercise habits. They discuss recommended exercises for cardiovascular health, including frequency, amount and what might work best for Isla’s lifestyle and interests. Her healthcare provider gives her information and resources with this information to take home.
Migraines
- Isla manages her migraines with aura well by taking over the counter medications including paracetamol and ibuprofen, but her healthcare provider advises her to make another appointment if her symptoms worsen.
Contraception:
- After discussing and reviewing the different contraception options and what is most suitable for Isla, she decides that she would like to have a copper coil intrauterine device (IUD) inserted. Her healthcare provider recommends that before Isla has the procedure to insert the IUD, she should continue using condoms and have a sexually transmitted infection (STI) health check done. Isla agrees to do both of these things.
