Q. What’s wrong with you? – “The stroke came on suddenly, one minute I was getting washed in the bathroom the next I felt that my arm and leg on the right wouldn’t work properly, it felt a bit weird as well, kind of tingly and numb. The physios have been great. Everything is nearly back to normal now. The occupational therapist (OT) has me feeling for things in a big bin of rice to try to get me to guess what things are. I am getting better at it now.”
Q. What are your current bladder symptoms? – “It’s so embarrassing, awful and I am really fed up with it. It just seems that I have just come back from the toilet and I want to go again. I am so tired as well.”
Q. How bothersome do you find these symptoms? – “I am so tired though. Sometimes I can’t get up in the morning, for breakfast and I want a wee sleep at 10am. I missed physio one day because I was asleep. I am up a lot overnight. Do you think it will get any better? Is there something that can be done? I think this is why I am so tired. It’s like every 2 hours, sometimes it feels like more. I don’t think I pass very much either.”
Q. Do you feel the need to get up at night for the toilet? – “I feel I am up a lot overnight. It’s making me very tired.”
Q. Do you feel that you have emptied your bladder? – “Well sometimes at the time I do think I’ve finished but very quickly I think ‘oh god I need to go again,’ I feel like there is more to come sometimes and then nothing. 10 minutes later there it is – the feeling’s back again. It’s wearing me out. It’s the one symptom that’s not improving. I am worried about it – worried about wetting the bed at home.”
Q. How much do you drink during the day? – “I probably have about 4-5 mugs a day.”
Q. Can you tell me what you drink over a typical day since you’ve been in hospital? – “I am an awful coffee drinker. I get a bit of a headache if I don’t get my fix of caffeine. I have coffee most times when the trolley comes round, and the girls make me a fly one sometimes. I’ve not been drinking lots of water as I am scared it makes me want to go to the toilet even more. A lot of the time it just seems to be little dribbles at a time.”
