Topic Loop:
The stroke nurse uses the Brief Interventions process to help Iain move forward with this goal. Go through the slides to find out more about the 4 A’s of the Brief Interventions model.
Ask – Raise the issue of smoking and health risk and ask Iain if he would like some information or personal help on smoking cessation. Iain identifies that he would like help to stop smoking and so this intervention can progress to the next stage. If he had only requested some information this should been supplied and the process would stop at this stage.
Assess – Assess the readiness to change, in Iain’s case he says he has had quite a fright and realises the furring up in his arteries could have been caused by smoking, and would like to stop smoking, though he has reservations.
Advise – Discuss Iain’s current smoking habits and options available and what Iain feels may suit him best to help him stop. Iain does not feel confident about being able to stop.
Assist – Help Iain devise an action plan and a SMART goal. Ian wants to try nicotine replacement therapy patches. Iain’s goal is to contact his GP within a week to ask for nicotine replacement therapy. Iain is also offered a referral to smoking cessation services but declines this.
