Supporting Jason’s plans to change – diet and exercise

In order to support Jason with his plans and continue to encourage and motivate him, we need to look at each lifestyle risk factor and the stage of change he is currently at. You have identified that Jason is at the Pre-contemplative stage for making changes to his diet and exercise.

What actions would you take at this stage? Select true or false to the statements below.

What actions would you take at this stage?

As a health professional:

I would tell Jason that he needs to improve his diet and exercise habits as soon as possible if he wants to reduce his risk of stroke. – False – you shouldn’t challenge someone who is at this stage of change as they haven’t yet accepted that this is a relevant issue for them.

I would tell Jason that this is a priority area for him to look at. – False – although he isn’t eating a healthy diet and exercising very much, he has other areas, which are more of a risk to his health, that he is more ready to address.

I would give Jason some leaflets about healthy living to encourage him to think about these issues again. – True – it might be a good idea to gently encourage him to think about these issues again in his own time. If possible finding relevant health promotion DVDs or men’s health information that is appropriate for younger people would be ideal.
