Leisure: What can help – return to holidays and travelling

A picture of Mr McGuire, he's thinking about a holidayPrior to his stroke, Mr McGuire was a keen traveller. He would like to plan a city break away with Mrs McGuire and later in the year also wishes to return to Gran Canaria where they have holidayed for the past 10 years.

The couple are concerned about the risks of flying and are keen to know more about travel options available to them.

To find out more about insurance requirements, adapted accommodation and organisations who can advise:

Bus travel
  • Some companies offer reduced fares for disabled people, if you book in advance (you may need to provide proof of eligibility) – contact your local operator for information.
  • Some companies will offer wheelchair lifts, wider entrances, flat floor, reclining seats, air conditioning and larger toilets.
  • For more information and advice on the rights of disabled passengers using buses and coaches visit Citizens Advice Scotland.
Air travel
  • The rules on air travel vary between airlines and countries. Check with the airline before you  fly. After a TIA or stroke it is advisable to check with your doctor before flying.
  • Provision of a disability badge or a letter from your doctor when booking holidays abroad allows the travel company to access their special needs department which can then arrange for free airport assistance e.g.: wheelchair provision, assistance boarding on and off and access to a lift onto the plane if there is no gateway in advance.
