Diagnosis

Vince

General mental confusion?

Vince followed task instructions as well as suggested activities without difficulty.

Visual neglect only?

Vince displayed no evidence of neglect to his left. He marked all items during the neglect testing (see video).

Visual neglect and possible visual field loss?

Vince displayed no evidence of neglect to his left. He marked all items during the neglect testing (see video).

Glasses need updating?

Vince’s glasses are 4 years old and an updated pair may be beneficial.

Limb weakness?

Vince did not have mobility issues. However, it is not unusual for patients that have had a stroke to demonstrate limb weakness combined with visual problems.

Visual field loss only?

When looking straight ahead (at the examiner’s eye) Vince failed to see items to his left (see confrontation video) yet he marked all items correctly during the neglect assessment (see neglect video).

Nigel

General mental confusion?

Nigel is not confused and can follow task instructions, difficulties are a result of an unawareness/neglect of his left side.

Visual neglect only?

Although Nigel showed visual neglect during the neglect testing (see video, he marked items on his right only) he also struggled during the visual field loss testing. This has to be taken into account for a correct diagnosis.

Visual neglect and possible visual field loss?

Nigel showed visual neglect during the neglect testing (see video, he marked items on his right only) and he also failed to see items on his left during the confrontation testing, so he may have visual field loss too.

Glasses need updating?

Nigel did not report blurred vision or loss of sight of items in the centre of his vision.

Limb weakness?

Nigel does not have mobility issues. However, it is not unusual for patients that have had a stroke to demonstrate limb weakness combined with visual problems.

Visual field loss only?

Although Nigel failed to see items on his left during confrontation testing (see confrontation video), he also struggled to maintain central fixation and drifted to the right. On the line crossing test , Nigel also showed difficulty finding the items on the left, suggesting more than just visual field loss visual neglect during the neglect testing (see video, he marked items on his right only).
