Stroke Training and Awareness Resources (STARs)


Ensuring everything is done at the right time

Put the tasks listed into three categories

Must be done before the brain scan

Insert iv cannula – (because they will need iv access to give contrast for the CTA)

Determine onset time

Check BM – (because you should have excluded hypoglycaemia)

Confirm clinical diagnosis of stroke

Request CT and/or CTA

Can be done whilst waiting for the brain scan

Take bloods

Complete NIHSS

ECG

Weigh patient

Check for factors which might influence benefit of thrombolysis and/or thrombectomy

Calculate the dose of alteplase

Must only be done after the brain scan

Give alteplase

Refer to thrombectomy centre

Chest X Ray

Organise urgent ambulance transfer to thrombectomy centre
