Bladder and bowel symptoms (i)

Q. When assessing bladder and bowel symptoms, which of the following should you assess? Select yes or no for each statement.

Previous history – Yes – Indicates presence of long term bladder and bowel difficulties and contributing factors e.g. pelvic floor damage from multiple births, benign prostatic hyperplasia, irritable bowel syndrome.

Previous management – Yes – Indicates previously successful treatment and management strategies – may need to try again or continue.

New bladder or bowel symptoms – Yes – Indicates stroke-related bladder and bowel difficulties, likely to be amenable to targeted interventions.

Bother to person – Yes – Identifies person’s understanding of effects of new bladder / bowel symptoms and motivation to resolve.
