1. Consider commencing long term laxatives – Yes – but only once all other options have been considered.

2. Consider increasing fibre in diet – Yes – if increasing fibre ensure fluid intake adequate.

3. Ensuring appropriate position on toilet – Yes – see the picture on the following page for the correct toilet position.

4. Consider implementing bowel regime – Yes – if all other options have been considered or if bowels need to move at planned time due to care package.

5. Increasing mobility – Yes – increases gut motility, consider referral to physio.

6. Consider abdominal massage – Yes – may help by increasing gut motility.

7. Ensuring adequate fluids – Yes – optimum intake 1.5-2 litres especially if diet high in fibre.
