Q. Use the arrow below the image to find out how you could you improve this environment for stroke patients with continence problems?
Some of these adaptations can be introduced with minimal cost whilst others would require some investment but can make an important difference to patients’ independence and ability to manage their continence.
NB: Also consider that this is not an ideal toileting environment for stroke patients as it is too small for wheelchair access and a walking frame/assistance from another would be challenging.
Q. How could you improve this environment for stroke patients with continence problems?
Call bell – Ensure call bell is available on both sides for easier access.
Hand towel holder – This should be at a lower level suitable for wheelchair use and standing.
Rails – Should consider rails that can be adjusted and which are not fixed.
Toilet seat height – Consider the height of the toilet. It may be necessary to use toilet seat raise, toilet frame or similar. A stool to support feet may be necessary, especially to assist bowel emptying.
Toilet Paper – This could be in a freestanding unit so it can be moved for easier access.
Sink – This should be accessible for all patients so important to consider where it is located and the height. Ideally it should be adjustable, where possible.
