Scene 1

Key worker: “That’s great you have achieved quite a few of those goals and been out and about with your husband that’s good. The one that we are still struggling with is the walking. We’ve recorded that you’ve not achieved it but how do you feel it has gone.”

Alice: “I thought it would be easier but I still can’t get myself up from a chair and even with a stick I just can’t walk.”

Scene 2

Key worker: “What has been difficult?”

Alice: “All of it I can’t move my left leg and stay upright, the therapist has had to step in and support me several times.”

Scene 3

Key worker: “Is it still one of your main priorities?”

Alice: “Yes, I’d like to keep trying but I don’t think I will ever be able to walk. Maybe I could try using a wheelchair, I’ve used it when I’ve gone out with my hubby and moved myself around with it when I was in the ward to go and chat to Jean in the TV room.”

Scene 4

Key worker: “How did you feel about doing that?”

Alice: “It’s not as bad as I thought it would be. It’s allowed me to go to the toilet by myself and then get help once there. I think I could get around the house with it and be more independent. That would be a great help to my hubby.”

Scene 5

Key worker: “Sounds like you have given it a lot of thought. Can we add it in as one of your goals?”

Alice: “Yes, I suppose so.”

Scene 6

Key worker: “You don’t sound too sure, what is worrying you?”

Alice: “I still want to try and walk. I know that I might not be able to do it but I still want to try. I suppose my only concern is if I use a wheelchair will I do myself any long term harm or potentially stop myself from ever walking?”
