Iain and his wife attend the stroke nurse clinic following his surgery. The stroke nurse wants to consider lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of further events. To gather more information the nurse asks Iain to describe a normal day.

The stroke nurse calculates that Iain consumes approximately 40 units of alcohol per week – see Topic Loop below for further information. When she points this out to Iain he is defensive and he says he is only a social drinker and never gets drunk. His wife then mentions that she thinks he also smokes too much and takes too much salt in his diet.

Iain: “8am – I have breakfast, usually bran cereal and milk. 1 cigarette.”
Iain’s wife: “1 cigarette before he gets up and dressed, 1 after breakfast. And I can’t get him to change from full fat milk to semi-skimmed!”

Iain: “9am – Golf club – round of golf with friends through the week, 2 cigarettes.”
Iain’s wife: “At least 2! More like you smoke 3 or 4!”

Iain: “1pm – soup and sandwich at golf club, usually 1 pint of beer. 1 cigarette.”
Iain’s wife: “And a whisky chaser!”

Iain: “2.30pm – Putting practise – ok and 2 cigarettes.”
Iain’s wife: “Hmmm…”

Iain: “4pm – Return home. Afternoon tea and cigarette.”
Iain’s wife: “Yes, 2 cigarettes!”

Iain: “6pm – Dinner – 1 course, maybe a dessert at the weekend. 1 cigarette before dinner & 1 after”
Iain’s wife: “And I try to make sure we have fish twice a week and we always have vegetables or salad.”

Iain: “We usually share a bottle of wine on a Saturday and Sunday”
Iain’s wife: “But you also have a whisky before dinner at the weekend.”

Iain’s wife: “Iain – you have a very generous whisky in the evening! And smoke the rest of the packet of cigarettes!”
