Identifying other risk factors for stroke

There are other factors which also need to be considered in secondary prevention such as high blood pressure (hypertension), raised cholesterol levels and diabetes.

Tests and measurements required:

  • Measure Blood pressure. High blood pressure can be managed with blood pressure lowering drugs. e.g. diuretics, ACE inhibitors.
  • Measure cholesterol levels. Raised cholesterol can be managed with cholesterol lowering drugs e.g. statins.
  • Test for diabetes. Raised blood sugar can be controlled with diet, oral medication and insulin.
  • Ask about other lifestyle risk factors. Modifications to diet, smoking & exercise can have an important role in the management of all these factors.

Tests and measurements not required:

  • Exercise tolerance test.
  • Peak flow measurements
  • Asthma

The three above are not risk factors/measurements for stroke.
