Looking for carotid artery disease

Where there is a confirmed diagnosis of  ischaemic stroke / TIA affecting the carotid territory the patient should be investigated for the presence of carotid disease.

  • Carotid imaging will determine the presence of carotid disease. This is relevant to patients with anterior circulation stroke on the ipsilateral side
  • Carotid imaging will determine the presence of carotid disease
  • If severe carotid stenosis is present, the patient should be referred for early carotid surgery
