Supported communication Strategies – understanding

Steven has indicated through facial expression and visual resources that he finds certain strategies helpful to support his understanding of speech and conversation.

  • TALK SLOWLY – Yes. Slowing down can allow more time to process what is being said, however being too slow can sound patronising.
  • USE GESTURE – Using clear gestures can reinforce what you are saying.
  • USE SHORT CLEAR SENTENCES – short phrases or sentences will be easier to understand. Use everyday language. Ask one question at a time.
  • VISUALS – using pictures, photographs or other visual resources can really help to clarify what is being said.
  • WRITTEN KEY WORDS – writing down a few key words to support what you are saying helps Steven to understand. It is always worthwhile to have pen and paper with you.
  • A QUIET PLACE – background noise can be challenging for people with Aphasia. Moving away from or reducing background noise will be helpful.
