Ongoing emotional support – Spiritual care referral

Nurse Jones pages John with the referral explaining that Trevor is suffering from emotional lability which is causing him

  • to cry uncontrollably
  • distress because it is completely out of character and his family are finding it very difficult to cope with his crying
  • frustration that these outbursts are interrupting his rehabilitation
Slide 1

‘I gather Janet said I might pop in this morning’, says John. ‘Yes, she said I might find it helpful to chat’, replies Trevor, while thinking to himself, ‘I hope I’m not going to make a fool of myself.’

Slide 2

‘How are things at the moment’, asks John. ‘Not so bad. It’s the crying that’s getting me down, though’, replies Trevor, while thinking to himself, ‘and it’s affecting the family.’

Slide 3

‘It’s bad, then, is it?’, asks John. ‘I just can’t control myself. There’s nothing I can do except wait for it to pass’, replies Trevor.

Slide 4

John is thinking, ‘Poor chap is finding this really tough going,’ but merely says, ‘I guess it’s embarrassing … frustrating … sounds as if it really gets you down?’ John replies, ‘You don’t know how bad it is!’

Slide 5

John thinks, ‘Don’t say anything. Just let that be, for a minute.’ Trevor continues, ‘It just scares me that I’m always going to be like this.’

Slide 6

‘Well, I’m very happy to come back again’, says John. ‘Actually, it does help speaking about it’, finishes Trevor.
