Early assessment: Swallow screening procedure

In NHS Scotland, it is a Stroke Standard that a swallow screening test should be carried out within 4 hours of admission to an acute hospital.

When Connie arrives at the Emergency Department of the hospital, her swallow is screened by a trained nurse.

Be familiar with your local organisation’s protocol
for screening for dysphagia.

Have undertaken sufficient training to feel competent in this task.

Be able to observe the early signs of dysphagia.

Understand the risk factors for dysphagia.
