It is lunchtime and you go into the ward to help Connie with her meal. Before you would start assisting Connie, there are some thing you need to consider. As you work through the task, each correct action will reduce the patient’s risk.
Correct Answers
Ensure Connie is alert and talk to her about the mealtime and what to expect.
Check what consistency of food and drinks Connie has been recommended.
Make sure Connie is in an optimal position for eating and drinking; well supported in an up-right position.
Check the swallowing care plan for specific instructions to support Connie during mealtimes e.g. level of support, pacing and prompts required.
Ensure Connie’s mouth is clean and moist and her dentures are comfortable.
Incorrect Answers
Position the food in front of Connie and leave for 15 minutes to see if she will feed herself – the SLT’s report states that Connie requires assistance with eating and drinking. If the food is left for 15 minutes it will be cold and unpleasant to eat.
Gradually recline Connie until she looks comfortable – this is not a safe position to feed someone who has swallowing difficulties.
