Insertion of gastrostomy tube

Get a recent coagulation screen

Should be within 1 week of date of procedure.

Offer the patient a light snack

The patient should be fasted pre-procedure.

Insert a venflon

If the patient requires sedation or prophylactic antibiotics this would be inserted.

Fast 6 hours pre-procedure

To ensure the stomach is empty.

Place a central line

This is not necessary.

Ask the patient whether or not they want a Gastrostomy

Obtain informed consent

Bill is able to give informed consent. Some patients may require assessment of their capacity to make decisions regarding their feeding. This is addressed further in the FREDA case study within this module.
