Post gastrostomy insertion and management of gastrostomy tube and site

Bill now has a PEG (Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy) inserted.

Bill is now learning how to manage his PEG for when he goes home.

First day post-insertion

Leave the stoma site undisturbed, later cleaning with mild soap and water.

Commence feeding cautiously, usually starting with water only.

Commence individual feeding regimen, as prescribed by the Dietitian.

From Day 2 onwards

Shower rather than have a bath to reduce risk of infection.

The gastrostomy tube should be rotated 360° daily to aid stoma formation. If the tube is initially sutured, this should happen once sutures are removed.

Clean the skin around the stoma site using mild soap and water, and dry thoroughly.

After 2 weeks

Having a bath can be recommenced.
