DVT risk factors

Immobility

Immobility reduces the speed of blood flow in her legs. Clots form more easily when the blood flow is slow.

Being over 80 years old

One in two thousand people experience a DVT every year in the UK. This figure increases to one in five hundred for people over 80 years old.

Illnesses or injury which cause immobility

The stroke has caused Mrs McGinty to be immobile.

Surgical operation over 30 minutes in duration

Mrs McGinty has not undergone any recent surgery.

Long journeys by train or flying

Mrs McGinty has not been on any recent long haul flights or train journeys.

Pregnancy

Mrs McGinty is not pregnant.

Obesity

Mrs McGinty is not obese. She has below average weight.

Blood-clotting conditions

Mrs McGinty does not have any condition such as thrombophilia which causes blood to clot more easily.

Contraceptive pill and hormone replacement therapy

Mrs McGinty does not take either of these.
