Managing the pain

Nurse Moffat tells Dr Bryce that she thinks Angela should have analgesia prescribed for her headache. Dr Bryce considers what he might prescribe.

Paracetamol

This would be the first choice for Angela’s headache since it is likely to be effective and is well tolerated.

Ibuprofen

This is best avoided in patients who have an intracerebral bleed since can affect platelet function.

Co-codamol

This can cause dizziness and nausea so is not used as the first line of treatment. Co-codamol is a combination of of Codeine and Paracetamol and should not be given in combination with Paracetamol.

Opiod analgesia

This is best avoided in stroke patients since it can cause drowsiness and confusion.
