You look at the computer and notice that Bob’s HbA1C level is over 48mmol/mol (over 6.5%).

Bob is normal and this HbA1C range is simply a stress response to stroke – No – look at the diagram below for HbA1c result.

Bob has impaired glucose tolerance, but this is not high enough to diagnose diabetes – No – look at the diagram below for HbA1c result.

Bob has diabetes mellitus – Yes – a single random glucose test or BM stix test is an unreliable diagnostic test but an HbA1c test will give average blood sugar (glucose) level for the last 2-3 months.

Diabetes Mellitus: 6.5% or Higher

Pre diabetes: 5.7 – 6.4%

Normal: 4- 5.6%
