Specific Suggestions for Les

The nurse recommends that Les speaks to his GP about the problems he is having achieving an erection. In the meantime she suggests that Les and Jean try adjusting the position in which they have sex, so that the arm is protected, and/or using pillows to provide support for the arm. The occupational therapist and physiotherapist may also be able to recommend any equipment to support safe and comfortable positioning during sexual activity.  The nurse adds that if these strategies do not help, Les should discuss further options such as medication with his GP at the arranged appointment.

Les has mentioned two particular problems. What specific suggestions could be given to Les to address each of these problems?

Increased tone in arm

Specific suggestion: Discuss use of pillows, positioning; refer to GP who might consider prescribing a skeletal muscle relaxant; refer to GP to consider referral to specialist for Botulinum toxin (Botox).

Erectile dysfunction

Specific suggestion: There are many causes of this, some of which are easily identifiable, some of which are not. In all cases the management options remain the same. It may be there is a medical reason which will determine management but often choice is down to personal preference and what works best. Refer to GP to look at potential causes such as medication but who may then also refer on to urology or sexual dysfunction nurse for specific management. Sometimes if no physical cause is found a referral to psychology may be required.
