Further tips

two care staff discussing something

  • Looking after patients with stroke who are dying is difficult and complex; there may be a tendency to use humour amongst the team to diffuse some of this tension. Some humour is good but care is needed so no offence is caused which could be upsetting to staff or in particular, families who are distressed. Misplaced humour, however innocently intended, can lead to mistrust and complaints
  • Beware of criticising other team members or other teams who aren’t present as a way of expressing frustration or perhaps to divert attention away from one’s own feelings of discomfort or uncertainty
  • It’s important not to use comments that patients, families or other members of staff might find offensive if they were to hear them for themselves
