Carotid endarterectomy – the procedure

Q. Put the following processes in the correct order:

  1. Explain risks and benefits
  2. Consent to treatment
  3. Admit to hospital
  4. Give local/general anaesthetic
  5. 3″ incision in neck
  6. Isolate internal carotid artery
  7. Insert shunt (optional)
  8. Open artery and remove atheroma
  9. Close artery/patch
  10. Close skin
  11. Send patient to High Dependency Unit
  12. Discharge patient 2-3 days later
