Risk of complications

Complications Risk category
Death Very rare <2%, usually due to stroke
Stroke Uncommon <5%, about half will be disabling
Headache Uncommon, can indicate hyperperfusion
Numb chin Common, perhaps at least 20%
Hoarse voice Uncommon 10%, due to laryngeal nerve damage
Facial weakness Very rare <5%, weakness on opposite side to surgery indicates a likely stroke
Heart attack Very rare <2%, more common with general anaesthetic
Wound haematoma Uncommon, depends on use of antithromotics but can threaten airway
