- Visual field loss and visual neglect symptoms are similar but arise from different types of brain damage.
- Symptoms are similar yet patients with visual field loss will normally be aware of their problems, whilst patients who have visual neglect will often lack insight.
- Both visual field loss and visual neglect can recover up to 3 months post stroke. It is therefore important to reassess the defects and to monitor treatment if some recovery has taken place, or to seek relevant support if symptoms persist.
- Both conditions, if they persist, may have a severe impact on daily function and rehabilitation of other stroke related problems, and should be given equal consideration to the more visible impairments of motor function and speech.
