Stroke Training and Awareness Resources (STARs)

What could be causing Peter’s problems?

Post stroke fatigue

Although this can be a problem following stroke this would not explain Peter’s difficulty reading. If Peter was suffering from post stroke fatigue it would be evident in his daily routine, e.g. becoming tired quickly when carrying out many tasks, not just reading. Peter copes well physically.

Low mood

If his mood was low it would be difficult for Peter to engage in many aspects of his daily life. Peter is happy to carry out his normal tasks on a daily basis and continues to enjoy meeting up with family and friends on a regular basis.

Reduced attention span

This would not be a reason for the problem reading as Peter can concentrate well on other things he enjoys doing e.g. chatting to family and friends, listening to music etc.

Visual field loss

Peter does not appear to have visual field loss as he can negotiate around his home and surrounding areas well. There is no evidence that he is missing objects or stimuli from either side of his peripheral vision.

Visual neglect/ inattention

Peter has no difficulty with other functional tasks, only reading.

Double vision

Peter has already explained that he does not have double vision.

Eye movements

If there was a problem with his saccadic eye movements he would have difficulty scanning over the letters on a page. Saccades are quick, simultaneous movements of both eyes in the same direction which would be required to read.
