Paul visits the GP
Scene 1
GP: “Hello Paul, what can I do for you today?”
Paul: “I am well, and feel a bit of a fraud taking up an appointment. The thing is, I went to join that new gym on the high street last week. As part of the induction, this young lad checked my blood pressure. Apparently it was higher than it should be. Long story short, they wouldn’t let me work out in the gym until I had it reviewed by my GP. ”
GP: “Okay, let’s check your blood pressure today. How have you been feeling? Have you noticed any change to your health? ”
Scene 2
Paul: Not at all, I think I’m very fit, certainly a lot healthier than a lot of others my age.
GP: “Any symptoms of breathlessness?”
Paul: “No.”
GP: “Chest Pain?”
Paul: “…Nope”
Scene 3
Paul’s GP checks his blood pressure on both arms…
GP: “Paul, your blood pressure is elevated today. It is 156/93mmHg. We would want it under 140/90mmHg. I am going to arrange for Jamie, the Practice Nurse to see you and arrange further tests . Can you ask at the front desk for appointment whenever suits you. ”
Paul: “Thanks. I can’t believe this, I don’t smoke, I eat well, my weight is not too bad.”
Remember you MUST check a pulse before taking a blood pressure with an automated machine. Most machines are not able to record an accurate blood pressure for those in atrial fibrillation
