What happens when Margaret is referred to the genetic clinic?

Image of questionnaire: before she attends the clinic, Margaret is asked to complete a questionnaire with details of her family members, including those in her family with a family condition. It includes:

  • names
  • dates of birth
  • medical problems & diagnoses
  • age at which they died
  • where they live or lived
  • any symptoms they have
  • results of any screening they have had

This allows a picture of Margaret’s family to be developed.

Image of question mark: Margaret is encouraged to ask any questions/express any concerns.

Image of plane: implications for travel/life insurance may be discussed. (BHF advice)

Image of blood sample: Margaret may be asked to give a blood sample for genetic testing.

Image of ECG machine: Further screening test may be carried out on Margaret, for example, ECG.

Image of information leaflet: Margaret is given appropriate information leaflets.

Image of letter: After her appointment, Margaret is sent a follow up letter and a further appointment is arranged.
